Kuala Lumpur- Malaysian police have detained a couple aged in their 50s for allegedly abusing their Indonesian maid, causing her to run away from their home early Monday. The 22-year-old woman, who had been working for 10 months for the same employers, escaped their home and was found wandering by a road in the north-eastern Kelantan state, said deputy criminal investigations chief Suhaimi Chik Noordin.
Police found bruises below her eyes as well as abrasions on her hands and body, believed to have been inflicted by a cane, Suhaimi was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.
The woman, who told police that her employers would beat her for unsatisfactory work, was sent for treatment at a nearby hospital before being returned to the employment agency, he said.
Her employers, who run a business, have been remanded for questioning and are liable to be charged with voluntarily causing hurt. If found guilty, they face a three-year jail term, fine or whipping.
Foreign maids working in Malaysia receive salaries starting from 100 dollars a month. Local media often highlight cases of "maid abuse", where young women are raped or beaten by their employers.
